Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. She made her first appearances in the television screen as Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in the ABC show Roseanne. Perry did not decide to explore acting as a profession until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were afraid of the negative impact stress might be a cause of. Perry claimed that she was nervous to be an actor during high school, but started performing at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to land tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent when she finished her degree. The feeling of homelessness, however, caused her to move back to California and she returned working in the stage. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother as part of The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry had the role of a political thriller Scandal alongside her father. The actress was also featured on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The role was given by audition even though she was a cousin with the role.
